Background of the Study
Digital language use in Nigeria is significantly shaped by social media platforms, with Facebook and Twitter serving as primary arenas for linguistic innovation and adaptation. While Facebook facilitates extended discourse, community building, and nuanced language practices, Twitter’s brevity and immediacy promote concise expressions and the rapid diffusion of new language forms (Okeke, 2023). This study compares language use on these platforms to understand how differing digital affordances influence syntax, vocabulary, and pragmatic strategies. It examines how Nigerian users adapt their language to suit the distinct communicative contexts provided by Facebook and Twitter, thereby highlighting variations in formality, code‑switching, and lexical creativity. The research further explores how cultural identity and socio-political factors drive the evolution of digital language use, contributing to the formation of hybrid linguistic forms that challenge traditional language norms (Adeniyi, 2023). By analyzing a corpus of posts and tweets, the study provides insights into the transformative effects of social media on language evolution in Nigeria, offering a comprehensive understanding of digital discourse dynamics (Chukwu, 2023).
Statement of the Problem
Despite extensive social media use in Nigeria, there is limited comparative research on how platforms like Facebook and Twitter differently influence language practices. Existing studies often address each platform in isolation, thereby neglecting the interplay between their distinct affordances and the resulting linguistic outcomes. This gap hampers our ability to develop a holistic understanding of digital language evolution in Nigeria. This study aims to address this deficiency by comparing linguistic features across Facebook and Twitter, elucidating the effects of digital environment on language use and identity formation (Okeke, 2024).
Objectives of the Study:
To compare language use on Facebook and Twitter in Nigeria.
To identify platform-specific linguistic features.
To evaluate the impact of digital affordances on language evolution.
Research Questions:
How do language practices differ between Facebook and Twitter?
What platform-specific factors drive these differences?
How do these differences influence overall digital language use?
Significance of the Study
This study contributes to understanding the multifaceted impact of social media on language by comparing Facebook and Twitter. Its findings will be beneficial for linguists, educators, and communication strategists, offering insights into digital discourse dynamics in Nigeria (Okeke, 2023).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
Limited to Nigerian Facebook and Twitter posts.
Definitions of Terms:
Digital Language Use: Communication practices on digital platforms.
Facebook: A social media platform for extended discourse.
Twitter: A microblogging platform characterized by brevity.
